Workshop on the Low Carbon Development and Resilient Society in Asia: Elements for Qatar and Future Regime

The workshop featured key concepts such as NAMAs, MRV, Low-Carbon/ Low- Emission Development, short-lived climate forcers, and adaptation.The workshop was co-organised by IGES and USAID-RDMA on the sidelines of UNFCCC Ad-hoc Working Groups’ informal session in Bangkok with the objective of sharing the latest insights and ongoing activities by IGES, USAID and their partners. It was attended by approximately 80 participants from various affiliations, including seven from development agencies such as UNEP, UNDP, ADB, RRC.AP, 12 from governments in Thailand, Bangladesh and other nations, four from universities, and representatives from a range of project-implementing organisations, NGOs and from the private sector.   Key Messages: Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) and Low Emission Development Strategies (LEDS) can be most effective when they are closely linked to overall development strategies. Reducing Short-lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) can bring significant co-benefits (near-term climate protection, improved air quality and public health, and increased crop yields), complementing long-lived greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation strategies. Further work is needed to account greenhouse gas reduction at the policy level and in the forestry sector. North-South and South-South knowledge-sharing is proving to be instrumental to enhance climate change actions
